Live cams have come a long wayconsidering the first webcam wasn't pointed at a person at all. In 1991,researchers at the University of Cambridge pointed a camera at a coffee pot sothey could check whether there was any coffee left without walking across thebuilding. The pictures eventually went onto the web in 1993, and people aroundthe world started watching.
Things got more interesting a few yearslater. In 1996, American student Jennifer Ringley launched JenniCam from hercollege dorm room. The camera captured her everyday life, including plenty ofcompletely ordinary moments as well as nudity and sex, and millions of peoplebecame interested in watching. The picture was primitive by today's standardsand only updated every few minutes, but the idea of watching a real persononline had arrived.
By the end of the 1990s, other cam siteswere experimenting with something that would become even more important:communication between the viewer and the person on camera. Once viewers couldchat with performers, the webcam stopped being simply a window into somebodyelse's room. The person watching could become part of what was happening.
Modern live cam sites have taken thatidea much further. Video is better, connections are faster and there can bethousands of performers available, but the basic attraction of a good cam showis still surprisingly similar. There is a real person on the other side of thescreen and what happens next isn't completely decided in advance.
So what separates a room worth staying infrom one you leave after thirty seconds?
Looks Get the Click, Personality Keeps It
Appearance obviously matters on a camsite. It's usually the first thing somebody sees, and with hundreds ofperformers online, a thumbnail has to give people some reason to click.
Once somebody enters the room, though,personality starts to matter. Some performers are funny, some flirt naturallyand others are simply good at talking to people. Someone who looks exactly likeyour type can turn out to be less interesting than a performer you clicked onalmost by accident.
Live cams involve actual people, andpeople are harder to sort into categories than thumbnails suggest.
Interaction Makes the Difference
Being live and feeling live aren'tnecessarily the same thing. A performer can technically be broadcasting whilebarely acknowledging what is happening in the room, at which point there isn'tmuch to separate the experience from prerecorded adult content.
A good performer pays attention withouthaving to respond to every message. Questions get answered, conversationsdevelop and what viewers say can influence what happens next.
Regular viewers can add to this. When thesame usernames return, performers may remember previous conversations andviewers start recognising each other. A small community can develop around aparticular room, giving people another reason to return.
Finding the Right Performer
Most cam platforms have a simple problem:there are a lot of people to choose from. Previews and categories help narrowthings down, but they can only tell the viewer so much.
Sites such as Babestation offer a rangeof livecam girls, and somebody might begin by looking for a particularappearance or type of show. What they can't know from the listing is whetherthey'll actually enjoy spending time in that person's room.
A thumbnail can't tell you whethersomebody is talkative, funny or particularly good at interacting with viewers.Once someone finds a performer whose appearance, personality and style all workfor them, searching through hundreds of alternatives becomes much lessimportant.
There Isn't One Type of Good Show
Not everybody wants the same thing fromlive cams. Some viewers like busy public rooms with plenty of chat, whileothers prefer quieter rooms where getting the performer's attention is easier.One person might want conversation and flirting while somebody else is mainlyinterested in femdom cams.
